Pravasi Achievers Gold Medal--2010

Pravasi( Non-Resident Indian) Achievers Gold Medal was presented to  Dr.Hiten Ghosh, VP and Chief Quality Officer of Hughes Network Systems in a ceremony in The House of Lords, London., on Sept 10th.  Thirty NRIs  from around the world were honored, three from USA.

Dr. Ghosh was honored for mobilizing Alumni resources of seven IITs (Indian Institute of Technology) with 40,000 members in global  National chapters of PanIIT Alumni Associations  in  USA, Canada, India , UK, France, Germany, Australia, Japan, Korea  and  Singapore with regional chapters in larger countries.

He was one of the founders of PanIIT alumni organization started in 2002 under the leadership of Rajat Gupta, managing Director of Mckinsey Consulting, that  helped create an IIT Brand that was recognized in a bill  of US Congress in 2005 honoring the contributions of IIT Alumni in economic, academic and professional life in USA . Such mobilization , different from traditional Alumni Association of individual  institute, enabled focus on the  opportunities of contribution by alumni of  IIT System  in Branding, advocacy and alumni social services  on a global basis . Aside from regional get-together, this mobilization created a structure of Annual Global PanIIT Alumni Conference Starting in 2003-- alternating between USA and India—bringing leaders of respective countries top Govt administration, Technical , financial and Academic leaders to discuss with IIT Alumni and Alumni leadership and develop projects on nation building in India.

In 2010,PanIIT Leadership Council endorsed a new concept of Bi-lateral project called WHEELS—for promoting common solutions to common problems of USA and India in six areas —Water, Health, Energy, Education, Lifestyles( Environment) and Security – where application of technology will be the focus thru a public –private corporate partnership  effort. These are represented as Six spokes of the Symbol  of WHEELS—each with a program director and advisory team. The overall project is an initiative of Capital IIT Alumni Association under the  direction of Gulab Bhavnani with Water under Ashok Sayal, Health under Suresh Shenoy , Energy under Sudhakar Keshavan with R. Ramanan as energy program manager and Education is under Dr. Ghosh with San Sengupta as program Manager.

Dr Ghosh has also  been a co-president of US National PanIIT Alumni ( 2004-2006) and a member of the Board of Directors of IIT Foundation, USA  and  founding president of Capital IIT Alumni Association in 1998. He will also receive Distinguished Alumni Service Award in Jan,2011 from  his alma-mater ,IIT,Kharagpur .
