Appeal From Friends
This request is from Sujit Singh, Shikhar Srivastava, Srikant Pathak, Rahul Rai, Avinash Pandrinath and Debjit Das and others from IITK 96 batch – all of us are IITK peers of Puneet that he was able to reach out to so far. The attachment to this email has the exact same message. It is included in case you would like to forward. Puneet is our batch-mate from IIT Kanpur, EE, B.Tech. 1996. Puneet met with an unfortunate car accident with his wife and two daughters this past thanksgiving in Orlando, FL (see specifics below or attachment). They lost their 6 year old daughter, and need immediate funds to provide adequate medical attention (see specifics below) to their 2 year old daughter. This incident was reported in the press in Syracuse here. At this time, we are looking to raise at least $100,000– so, please provide what you can to the best you can. While nothing could fill this tragic loss – your help and consideration in getting this grieving family back on their feet – would be gratefully appreciated! To donate, please see below. Thank You Sujit Singh How you can helpOn behalf of Puneet, and the Capital IIT family, we thank everyone for donating generously. Due to some latest developments, more monetary donations are not needed now (see below for the latest updates), but please continue to keep the little one, and the bereaved family in your prayers.
(For those who donated, this was a 501(c)(3) tax deductible donation.) If you have any questions regarding this, please email me at singhsujitk@gmail.com. Latest Update
(December 30th, 2010)Dear all, I
wanted to give you an update on Rishita's condition and also on the fund
raiser. This is based on a call I had with Puneet today. Puneet
and family shifted from the Arnold Palmer Hospital in Orlando to the
rehab facility in Jacksonville on the 23rd. The in-patient therapy
started on the 24th. Per Puneet, Rishita is improving every day. She is
now saying few words of her own also occasionally. She is now able to
remain standing for a short period by holding on to something. She is
also making efforts to walk by holding the parents' hands from both
side. However, physical therapist has to work on her to make her learn
walking skills again. Similarly, speech therapist will be working on her
to make her swallow and take feed through mouth. This is very good
progress compared to about 3 weeks ago when she was not recognizing any
body, and almost day and night difference from late November.
Based on this good progress, hospital has recommended that the
in-patient therapy can stop around the 6th/7th/8th of January, at which
time the family can move to Syracuse and begin out-patient therapy
there. This means that instead of the originally proposed 4-6 weeks of
in-patient therapy, she will only undergo about 2 weeks. This is a big
positive as she is progressing faster than originally suggested by the
Doctor's.
As per the fundraising efforts, thanks to all of you, we have so
far raised a little over 30K. Some of this was used to pay for the
initial fee so that the hospital in Jacksonville would admit Rishita.
About 60% of it came through the Capital IIT website. We thank all of
you who were so generous with your money. We also have people who have
pledged to the tune of 20K (over and above the 30K raised) and would
rather pay a medical expense directly. This includes fund raised by some
of our friends in India. So, this means, we raised over 50K in about a
week's time.
Given the reduced in-patient therapy requirements, we feel that
this will be enough money to fulfill the financial needs for Rishita's
medical expenses. As such, Puneet is requesting that we no longer raise
funds. If your check is not already in the mail, please do not mail it
in any more. The money left at the end of the in-patient stay will be
used towards paying for the out-patient therapy over the next few
months.
A big thank you also for your thoughts, prayers and blessings.
Puneet and famiy credit that for the good progress so far. Many many
thanks, and please continue to keep Rishita and the family in your
thoughts and prayers.
Please feel free to forward as appropriate. Sujit

Thought Leadership Program:
Lifestyles and Sustenance
As we browse through news
about India, our hearts race with a range of emotions. On one page, we
find the start or progress of an excellent development project. Then we
find the misery of scarcity of fresh water. Our emotions sink when we
come up to the story about police action to prevent demonstrators from
destroying public property for some cause. There is opposition to dams,
roads, steel plants, mining, and port development just to name a few
instances. Why are people opposed to dams, which provide the much needed
electric power and water? How can people oppose development projects
when young people need jobs and the nation needs? At the same time, as
responsible citizens, we should ask if a project harms the environment. As India embarks on grand GDP growth
IITians can contribute their knowledge on these issues. Here is your
chance to examine the general trend of development and express your
considered thoughts on the subjects of Lifestyles and Sustenance. While
we are not heaping praise or criticism of specific individuals and
projects, here are a couple of cases to get you to don your thinking
caps. It will be great if someone volunteers to write about Indian
attitudes towards investment, sacrifice, risk, and "Not in my Backyard." Greenko

This group plans to set up an energy

green aspects of this venture.http://www.ibef.org/artdisplay.aspx?tdy=1&art_id=26476&cat_id=60&utm_source=newsalert&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=http://www.ibef.org Yvon Chouinard, Founder of

reduces waste. He also offers a slew of counterintuitive business tips
for how to do good while increasing the bottom line." I am sure you

Meeting with
Honorable Kapil Sibal
A team from Capital IIT Alumni
Association met Mr. Kapil Sibal and Ambassador Meera Shankar on 31 May
2010. Suresh Shenoy presented a short briefing describing the WHEELS
program, a proposal for Database of Indian Professionals, and PiTech
Magazine. There was good discussion and the minister was supportive of
the ideas and proposals and appreciative of the benefits of the
programs. The Indian Embassy actually requested Capital IIT to look into
the possibility of developing the database of Indian Professionals so
that collaborative efforts can be launched quickly by calling on
interested professionals with appropriate expertise and interest. Kumar
Chandran of Fracsys and an ad hoc team of IITians are leading the
effort. Professor Nitish Thakur has led the effort of publishing the
renowned PiTech Magazine. As the readers of this newsletter are aware,
Gulab Bhavnani is the Program Director for the WHEELS Program.
Hon. Kapil Sibal with Capital IIT Members
 |
Mr. Shenoy pointed out that significant voluntary effort went into
these projects and they are moving on a strong pace. But the time has
arrived, he informed the minister, that the Government of India should
show support and sponsorship to accelerate the pace of progress of these
initiatives and gain their benefits. The minister asked for a business
plan and a budget so that he can place it before the Indian cabinet for
financial support. The Board is working on the plan.
Interested
readers are urged to call Mr. Sengupta, President Capital IIT for more
information and with offers of participation in these programs.

KIAP IIT K owes the past 50 years of its success to
the Kanpur Indo-American Program (KIAP), a collaboration between The
United States and India to build a solid foundation for the Institute.
During the period 1962-72, the Institute received technical assistance
under KIAP to from a consortium of nine leading US Institutions. Under
the program, faculty members from these Institutions assisted the
Institute in the setting up of the academic programs and development |
